Find Local Information

This is the completion of the class worksheet #4

Please compare the work you have in your work book before viewing the information related here..

In the past pages, we have been watching to see the progress made by various search engines and directories.

As we see visits that have been directed by these engines we have made an effort to track them.

Below is a listing of some of our more recent visitors.  Some day we will compile these to see just where the most traffic comes to us from.

You will remember than recently Ask Jeeves (ISP PAGE) has been sold to antoehr company.  It seems like it has been awhile since everyone was being bought out every other day.  There is big money in search engines now and I see some major shakeups in the near future.

These include some of the big names like The Google Search Engine, ATW's ISP, Big Y's ISP, and ISP's on HotBot.

Of these, it always seems that Google is, and will remain the King.  It is interesting to note that AllTheWeb is also known as FAST.

We have also had visits from some of the up-and-comers like msn, aol (and intranet aol), Go,

There are numerous type to be seen as compared in figure 7.6 in page 341 of the workbook.

Compare the following resources:

You will remember that we are also enjoying visits from some of the older engines.  These include some of the early ones I first worked with.  Engines that are slipping away like Altavista results, Excite responses, and WebCrawler, Lycos, MSN, Netscape, DMOZ , About,

We have also had quite a few I have never heard of.  Really, one could get quite carried away trying to keep track of where all the traffic comes from.  Consider also that many sites do not provides any referer information to let you know how they found you.  this makes the task of finding were your visitors come from even more difficult.

Just during the time I have been writing this I have found a few more sites.  I am posting them in no particular order in an effort to document some of the ones I have found.  These includes sites like Zap Meta, iWonPepe Search (kinda weird name, huh?), Wisenut, 2Go, Overture, Direct Hit, Snap, Scrub, Mamma and Queryster.

I always throught that Mamma was an unusual name for a search engine, but then again, if you can't trust an answer from your Mamma, who can you ask?

That brings us to the next half dozen.  Are these going to bring more traffic than the others/?  I am listing them here so I remember to check at a later date.  I will try to remember to check up on them later and post the results.

  1. Entireweb
  2. MetaCrawler
  3. Search.com and #2
  4. Meceoo
  5. Infonetware
  6. Profusion
  7. MetaEureka
It is an exciting time in the time of our lives.  Just the fact that we can make web pages that are then seen by millions of people arround the world is a testiment to that.  Can you imagine what people living just fifty years ago would have thought if they had been told what it would be like today?

Now would be a great time to go back over the past lessons 1, 2, 3 and this one (4).
